Prozac (generic: fluoxetine), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI antidepressant), was approved by the FDA in 1987. Prozac is manufactured by Eli Lilly & Co. Prozac and other antidepressants in its class have been linked with suicidal thoughts and behavior in children and adolescents. Prozac has also been linked with a serious condition in newborns whose mothers took Prozac during pregnancy.
A study published on February 9, 2006 in The New England Journal of Medicine found that persistent pulmonary hypertension was 6 times more common in babies whose mothers had taken a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI drug) during pregnancy, specifically after their 20th week of pregnancy. This higher incidence was in comparison to women who did not take an antidepressant medication during pregnancy. Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn is potentially fatal and causes a lack of oxygen in the blood stream of the baby due to high blood pressure in the blood vessels of the lungs. The FDA issued a public health advisory about PPHN in July 2006. Prozac is in Pregnancy Category C.
