Staten Island Ferry Crash 2010

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

According to the chief engineer of the Staten Island ferry, (Andrew J. Barberi), the engine alarms did not sound before the crash.

Three dozen passengers were injured from this horrific crash. The investigation is being conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board and, according to the crew of the ferry, there were no problems with the propulsion system.

Federal investigators think it is too early to tell the cause of this disaster.

Robert L. Summalt, a member of the Safety Board, is not ruling anyting out. The captain, Donald Russell, and the crew of the Andrew J. Barberi Staten Island ferry passed blood alcohol tests but the drug tests are pending.

Thank God there were no fatalities. However, it seems possible that the proper safety precautions were not followed or not mandated. It is unfortunate that the only way to keep the City accountable is through the filing of lawsuits.

2010 Staten Island Ferry Crash

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

It appears, unbelievably, the Staten Island ferry has crashed again. Even more incredible is the fact that it is the same ferry that crashed in 2003 killing 11 and injuring dozens more. The Andrew J. Barberi ferry certainly has not had a great track record.

From a legal standpoint, the city is going to really pay for this mishap. It will be interesting to see the defense they mount for this egregious negligence. Apparently they have not put the proper safety rules in place to protect the citizens of this city.

In order to file a claim against the city for this ferry crash, an injured party must hire a lawfirm with the experience in fighting the city. It is critical that you call a lawyer immediately as Notice of Claim against the city must be filed within 90 days of the accident or sometimes even sooner depending on the municipality. The right injury lawyer makes all the difference.

Additionally, the summons and complaint against the city or other municipality must be filed within a year and 90 days from the date of the accident and sometimes sooner. Suing the city is a special type of claim and the lawyers handling it need to have expierience in dealing with these types of city cases.
